The Second Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party held in 1903 was truly historic for the world working class. At the Congress the battle between the two distinct trends in Social Democracy, revolutionary Marxism and opportunism, was brought to a head and fought out to a conclusion. The Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, were for building a disciplined party of professional revolutionaries, a vanguard party of the working class that would lead the working class to take the power. In the course of the 1905 revolution the Mensheviks were revealed as opponents of insurrection who wished to see the working class play a completely subservient role to the bourgeoisie.
