Tuesday, December 12th 2000 was the was the day that workers found out that general motors had given Luton a 'death sentence' – it was going to shut down the Vauxhall Luton plant, with 2,000 sackings.

A national strike of GM workers took place on February 23rd. Pickets were out, and workers were in the thick of the fight.

What the workers did not know was that their leaders , as they were picketing, were at a hotel at Watford, putting the final touches to the deal to shut them down.
